Making the Switch from Box Sync to Box Drive

So you're ready to make the switch from Box Sync to Box Drive?  Follow these simple steps:

Ensure all your files are synced to Box

Before making any changes, make sure all of your content is synced up to Box.  Use the desktop Sync icons to verify that the syncing process has completed and that there are no problem file notifications.  If you have any error notifications, consult the Box Troubleshooting article for the specific problem to remove any issues with files syncing.

Uninstall Box Sync

Box Sync and Box Drive cannot both be installed on the same device, so before you install Box Drive you must uninstall Box Sync.

Tip   The uninstall instructions ask you to delete the Box Sync folder from your machine. This is only required to clean up files and prepared for a fresh installation of Box Sync.  When you move to Box Drive, we recommend you keep this folder for some time after installing Box Drive, so you can verify that no files were lost in the transition.

If you run into storage limits on your machine, deleting the Box Sync folder can be a good way to free up space, but only after you are sure your content is all safely stored in Box.

Install Box Drive

Once Box Sync is removed, you are ready to download the Box Drive installer.  If you wish, you can consult detailed installation instructions.

When you complete the installation, log in to Box to start using Box Drive.  Get more information on using Box Drive.

Large Scale Migrations

The process detailed above is most helpful for an individual looking to change from Box Sync to Box Drive, but it may not be the optimal solution for IT teams looking to migrate a large number of users. We are currently investigating possible solutions to improve this process for large teams who would like to switch to Box Drive.
