Box Preview Update - 8/10/2017

Box’s video player now has support for:

  • Closed captioning — Videos in Box’s video player will now display closed captions and subtitles, enabled by the user using a simple toggle in the Box video player controls, with support for multiple closed caption/subtitles for the same video file. Closed captioning will only be displayed for videos with closed captions already in them (either in .srt, .vtt, MPEG-4 Timed Text, or CEA-608/708 format).
  • Keyboard shortcuts — Users will now be able to perform all actions available in the video player controls using keyboard shortcuts instead of a mouse. This includes playing, pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding, increasing or decreasing volume, toggling mute, toggling fullscreen mode, toggling closed captions/subtitles, and navigating (tabbing through) video settings like playback speed and video quality. Keyboard shortcuts include:
tab/shift+tab: navigate buttons
space/k: toggle playback (play/pause)
left/right arrow: seek back/forward 5 seconds
j/l: seek back/forward 10 seconds
0/Home: start over from beginning of video
up/down arrow: adjust volume
</>: slow down or speed up
f: toggle fullscreen
m: toggle mute
c: toggle closed-captions/subtitles
  • Screen-readable controls — Users with accessibility needs who utilize screen readers on their device, such as the macOS VoiceOver, will now be able to receive audio feedback on which control in the Box video player is highlighted as they tab through the different options.

To learn more about the new features, you can check out this demo video, where you can try any of the features described above using our web application.
