Box Product News

As we've communicated previously, the Box Web Application is about to get even better, with a simplified sharing experience that delivers a more consistent and streamlined way to share files and folders. You can find more information about the updates in this release, including screenshots of the old and new experiences, at our Simplified Sharing presentation.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be enabling the new Simplified Sharing experience for all Free (Individual) and Personal Pro users. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the new experience - simply click the 'Beta' label within the new sharing experience to give us your feedback.

Not sure what type of account you have? Simply navigate to the Account tab of Account Settings and look for the 'Account Type' field.

Note: All enterprise customers will be able to opt-in to the beta in the coming weeks via the Box Admin Console. See our Coming Soon article for more information.

Late last year, we added the ability to quickly see who’s looked at or edited a Box Note recently with the Presence feature, displaying user avatars in the header of Notes. In this update we’re bringing a similar experience to the Box Web App for all file types. Users, with permission, will see avatars in the header of the Preview page whenever other users have recently previewed, edited, or commented on that file. This change will be gradually rolling out to all users beginning April 18, 2018 and finishing by April 30, 2018. Learn more here.

We’re always looking for ways to improve sharing and collaboration in Box. To make it easier than ever to invite someone to edit a file, we have officially launched the ability to ‘invite collaborators’ to individual files (previously collaborators could only be invited at the folder level) for our users! Learn more here.

You can also find additional information via our Community documentation.

Note: This feature is officially live and the announcement is made here.

Due to compatibility issues discovered with some integrations and desktop editing applications including Box Edit, the release of Single File Collaboration (adding the ability into Invite collaborators to individual files) has been rolled back until further notice while we work to improve compatibility across experiences.
The ‘invite collaborators’ option that was added in mid-September 2017 on files will be removed from both the web and mobile applications. Collaborations already created on files will be maintained, but users that have been collaborated to individual files will notice that the 'Open' button (on the web application) will be disabled on these files. We will re-enable the 'Open' button once the compatibility issues have been resolved.
As always, users can be invited as collaborators at the folder level in order to edit the files contained in that folder.

  • Work Together

To more closely align with shared link permissions and collaboration functionality, we are making a slight change to one of the permission names for shared links. Specifically, the existing ‘People in this folder’ shared link name will be updated to ‘People in this file’ for shared links on files specifically. There is no change to shared link names for folders. More information about shared links can be found here.

Now, Box will make it easier than ever to create and manage groups. Our new interface makes it easier to create, edit, update, and empower groups to have access to the right content with the right members.

Folder Invitation links (see screenshot below) will stop being supported in early May 2017. On this date, the folder invitation link will disappear from the folder settings page and existing folder invitation links will stop working.

Users will be able to achieve similar functionality with shared links. Shared links can be used as invitation links by enabling the setting "Allow anyone who can access this folder from a shared link to join as a collaborator" on the folder settings page (see screenshot below). If users in your enterprise have shared folder invitation links outside of Box, they should replace them with shared links with this setting enabled before early May 2017.

URLs for weblinks accessed in shared folders in the new Box UI are changing from "/web_link/1234?sharedName=2zgvn31f1hlvhbwq1" or "/web_link/1234?vanityName=somevanityfoldername" to "/s/2zgvn31f1hlvhbwq1/web_link/1234" or "/v/somevanityfoldername/web_link/1234" respectively.

The old URL scheme will no longer work, so if users have saved the old URLs (e.g. in an email) they will no longer work. This change does not apply to weblinks accessed in owned or collaborated folders, however.
