We constantly work to improve the user experience on Box, and sometimes that means removing functionality to make room for an even better product.  Please review the features below that will retire in the coming months and find additional support information in these notices.

Box Desktop (Box Drive, Box Sync, Notes for Desktop and Box Tools) support on Mac OS 10.11

  • On July 31, 2018, Box Drive, Box Sync, Notes for Desktop and Box Tools will no longer be supported on Mac OS 10.11. Per our OS support policy, we maintain support for Box on only the two latest versions of Mac OS (10.12 & 10.13).
  • Following July 31, 2018, users will still be able to access the Box Desktop applications (Box Drive, Box Sync, Notes for Desktop and Box Tools) on 10.11, but it will be unsupported by Box, including all security patches.

WebDAV Support

  • On Jan 31, 2019, we will deprecate support for WebDAV. If you are connecting to Box using a WebDAV client, you will see connection errors and will no longer be able to view or access your content on Box through your WebDAV client.
  • We recommend that customers currently using WebDAV migrate to an alternative Box tool at their earliest convenience. Box Drive or the Box WebApp may be suitable alternatives based on the use case.

We constantly work to improve the user experience on Box, and sometimes that means removing functionality to make room for an even better product.  Please review the features below that will retire in the coming months and find additional support information in these notices.

TLS 1.0

  • As previously communicated in our last EOL announcement, to maintain the highest security standards, promote the safety of our customers' data, and align with industry-wide best practices, Box will disable the TLS 1.0 encryption protocol across all Box services on June 15, 2018.
  • After Box disables TLS 1.0, users leveraging browsers, 3rd party applications or Box applications that do not support TLS 1.1 or 1.2 will not be able to access Box. Review the Box Community article Preparing for TLS 1.0 Disablement for best practices.

Note   On June 15, 2018 these desktop applications will enforce the previously announced deprecation of the .NET 4.0 framework.  All Windows machines must be on .NET 4.5.2 or higher.

Note: Existing users will slowly begin to update to this new version through the end of May.

Box for Office v4.3.1217/v4.4.1221 is now available for download here. New users will default to this version, existing users will not be automatically updated to this new build immediately.

This version reverts a change made in the prior release (Box for Office v4.1.1212/v4.2.1220) that defaulted Microsoft Office programs to use IE 11 via the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION registry keys - Please see additional background below.

This change in the prior release inadvertently affected other Microsoft Office add-ins. Unfortunately, due to limitations with our update process, we cannot revert back to the last set value. In order to prevent future issues, the new release to Box for Office v4.3.1217/v4.4.1221 will delete the Microsoft Office program registry values from the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION registry keys.

Admins who set Microsoft Office programs to use a non-default web browser control in the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION registry keys prior to installing Box for Office v4.1.1212/v4.2.1220, may need to re-set their non-default web browser control after updating to Box for Office v4.3.1217/v4.4.1221.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and if you have any questions, please reach out to the Box User Services team.

Background:
In the prior release, Box for Office v4.1.1212/v4.2.1220, we forced Microsoft Office programs to use IE 11 for any web browser controls used by the Office program. This was done by adding the Microsoft Office program executables (WinWord.exe, POWERPNT.EXE, outlook.exe, and EXCEL.EXE) as registry values under the following registry keys and setting the value data to be "11001":

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

For more information on the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION settings, please read here.
By default, the Office program values do not exist under the keys above.

The update to Box for Office v4.3.1217/v4.4.1221 will delete the values (WinWord.exe, POWERPNT.EXE, outlook.exe, and EXCEL.EXE) from the locations above and revert the Microsoft Office programs back to using the default web browser control.

Box Tools v4 has now been released to all existing Box Tools users.  All users should receive this update automatically.  Please remember that your environment must comply with the new system requirements to ensure continued use of Box Tools.

Additionally, please take note of these important known limitations:

  • Box Tools v3 is not compatible with Chrome v66 which is scheduled to release on April 17th. Please ensure that users who will update to Chrome v66 have updated to Box Tools v4.
  • After updating to Box Tools v4, some Chrome and Firefox users may incorrectly be shown a prompt to download Box Tools when attempting to open files to their desktop in the Box for Salesforce integration.  This should be resolved in a future release of Chromeand Firefox.  Users can still manually download, edit and upload files without using Box Edit or they can use Box Edit in the Box web application outside of the Box for Salesforce integration.

Box Notes currently only notify users when a comment is made, but not when an annotation is made. This makes it harder for teams to work together and provide quick feedback. With this update, users will start receiving notifications for relevant annotations. We will also start notifying users about other relevant comments, such as a response to an earlier comment.

Late last year, we added the ability to quickly see who’s looked at or edited a Box Note recently with the Presence feature, displaying user avatars in the header of Notes. In this update we’re bringing a similar experience to the Box Web App for all file types. Users, with permission, will see avatars in the header of the Preview page whenever other users have recently previewed, edited, or commented on that file. This change will be gradually rolling out to all users beginning April 18, 2018 and finishing by April 30, 2018. Learn more here.
