Box Drive Search is Not Working As Expected

The Search tool within Box Drive allows you to search through your content on your local machine just as you can with the Box Web Application.  Sometimes though, Search will not work as desired. This article will help you in the event that happens to you.

 

Depending on the problem you are experiencing, there are different steps you can take. See the list below and consult the related section for more information:

 

Searching on Box Drive

Depending on your Operating System, the steps you need to take to use Box Drive Search will differ. Please follow the steps below associated with your OS to use Box Drive Search:

Mac:

  1. Click on the Box icon in the Mac Menubar. This will present the search bar.
  2. Enter your search terms and allow the results to load.
  3. Select the result that matches the content you were looking for. It will then be loaded in Finder.

Windows:

  1. Click on the Box icon in the Windows System Tray. This will present a pop-up in the corner of your screen.
  2. Enter your search terms into the search bar at the top of the pop-up and allow your results to load.
  3. Select the item you were searching for which will open in Explorer.

 

Searches are not returning any results

If you enter your search terms but do not receive any results, please use the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Attempt multiple different searches to determine if the issue exists only with a single search or all searches.
  2. Try the same searches on Box.com. Are results returned there?
  3. Submit your Box Drive logs and open a case with Box User Services.
    • Please note the time and search terms that produced the problem. This will help us quickly identify the associated logs and isolate the root cause.

 

New items are not appearing in search results

When new content is uploaded to Box or items are changed, they must be indexed in order for them to be returned by our Search tool. Please allow up to 10 minutes for these items to be indexed so that the processes can complete. If, after that time, the results still do not appear, follow the steps below:

  1. Try the same search on Box.com. Is the new or changed item appearing in those search results?
  2. Have a collaborator attempt to search for the same content.
  3. Submit your Box Drive logs and open a case with Box User Services.
    • Please note the time and search terms that produced the problem. This will help us quickly identify the associated logs and isolate the root cause.
